When to shoot what in South Africa: harvest times!


Apples: (Western Cape)
Full Blossom: 12- 22 October.
First Fruit by Mid November and will reach a size of 40mm by end December.
First Harvest (Royal Gala) by 26 January.
Golden Delicious & Reds 1st week of March. 
Granny Smith first week of April.
Last Harvest by second week of May

Berries: (Cape Town)
This year berries will start to ripen October to November and carry on bearing fruit till February or March depending on rainfall. Main harvest time is around January
.

Citrus (Oranges and Lemons):
Orange trees blooms from the last week of September to first week of October.
Fruit (deep orange colour) starts at end March - April, but guaranteed ‘good fruit’ can be found more towards May - June.
One can still get fruit till end September, but of a lower quality.
Lemons bloom and fruit throughout the year, but bigger blooms and fruit will coincide with oranges.

Grapes:
Table grapes are mainly found on the West Coast and Orange River Valley in December - January.
“Wine” grapes found in the Western Cape: beginning February to end of March.

Sunflowers (Freestate and Gauteng):
Planted in October.
Flowers can be found from November till end of January. Sometimes into early February depending on weather.
All farmers plant after the first rains and the sunflowers then bloom 60 days later.
First rains occur either in November or December, with the flowers blooming from mid January to beginning March.
Main areas of Production are western Free State and North West Province.

Wheat:
Wheat in Western Cape came very early this year. 90% of wheat will be harvested  by mid November and will all be gone by the end November.
Wheat in north east Free State will be ripe and ready for harvest from the middle to end of December.

Barley (Western Cape):
Falls under the same time as Wheat – all will be harvested by end of November.
